How to Use Verb Patterns Correctly

1. Infinitive Verb Patterns

Used after certain verbs, adjectives, and nouns to express actions or intentions.

  • Infinitive after verbs like want, need, hope, plan: I want to learn English.
  • Infinitive after adjectives like happy, easy, difficult: It's difficult to study.
  • Infinitive after nouns like decision, plan: She made a decision to travel.
Example: He decided to go to the park.

2. Gerund Verb Patterns

Used after certain verbs, prepositions, and adjectives to describe activities or ongoing actions.

  • Gerund after verbs like enjoy, avoid, finish, suggest: She enjoys reading books.
  • Gerund after prepositions: He is good at swimming.
  • Gerund after adjectives like interested, excited, tired: She is excited about learning.

3. Verb + Object Patterns

Some verbs require an object (a noun or pronoun) after them. These verbs can be followed by both a noun and an infinitive or gerund.
